Remember Andy, the Crazy Guy on a Bike I wrote about last month:
Crazy Guy on a Bike full of unexpected surprises
Andy and Paul have inspired me to start bike riding again
At the end of our April Nature Coast Multiple Myeloma Support Group meeting, Andy made an unusual request. “I’m looking for people to bike with me from Jacksonville to St. Augustine on the first weekend of May–probably the 5th and 6th.” He continued. “Just to be able to do something together as a group is powerful. We will stop and spend Saturday night on the way–then continue and dip our front tires in the Atlantic Ocean.”
I am pleased to share that I heard from Andy today–and he made it! Here’s an account of the last segment of Andy’s trip in his own words:
Not bad at all, Andy! Feel good and keep smiling! PatAfter 1520 miles of bicycling I have reached the Atlantic Ocean!
Hi Everyone,
I returned to the Sninsky Gainesville house yesterday after completing my trip to the Atlantic Ocean. What began on March 2nd with new friendships in the Bayou district of New Orleans ended with my niece, Stacey, and her fiance, Jim, riding with me into St. Augustine. At the St. Augustine Pier I did the ceremonial tire dip and then the tour of the city and fort. All of this happened in the afternoon and with the end of the day Sunday Stacey and Jim drove me and my bicycle back to Palatka, where I would sleep in the William Penn motel–all of you family members know our roots are in PA–and then journey over to Gainesville. On Monday I finished up by riding 78 miles with an unloaded bike back and that made it fun even if it was 91 degrees. I arrived in Gainesville with thunder and lightning all around me. I had my poncho on but it was not needed. It was a great feeling knowing what I had accomplished and now I look forward to traveling up to Nashville, TN with the family for cousin Jared’s graduation this weekend. I have one final talk to give at the Multiple Myeloma support group in Gainesville on Monday the 14th. I will leave Gainesville on the 16th to begin preparations for our mom’s 90th celebration in June. That will be a chance to regale family with this adventure since I will have a captive audience and they might be polite to me for the sake of Grandma, Aunt, Sister, Great Grandma Marge… …All this made for an amazing adventure that makes me feel great. I could not have done it without all of you and my heartfelt thanks goes out to Y’all! It is a super end to a shaky beginning. Good luck to all of you, especially those of you who battle Multiple Myeloma everyday. I know what you are going through! Sincerely, Andy Not bad for a guy with incurable cancer!
