Readers, friends and family often ask me, “Pat, how do you stay so positive?”
Well, you might not know it from the down-in-the-dumps post I shared with you yesterday, but I rarely–if ever–have a bad day.
What’s my secret?
I don’t think of time in 24 hour increments. After all, 24 hours is a lot of time to waste being down. During the course of 24 hours, there must be 20 minutes, an hour or more that are better than some others that day, right?
To “have a bad day” is to concede that the past 24 hours were all bad. I refuse to accept that!
By breaking my day down into smaller segments, I am able to avoid labeling an entire day as bad, lost or wasted.
For example, “I had a bad morning, but my afternoon was better.”
And if you can break time down into even smaller increments, that’s better still. “I felt fine when I woke-up. But I was really hurting and discouraged around 10 am. Thank goodness by late morning, things started looking up!”
See! That’s my secret. I don’t deny that there are times when I experience more pain or feel down. I just refuse to let it ruin an entire day!
If I’m nauseous first thing in the morning, I have confidence that I can take appropriate steps to feel better later on. I may not feel great. But any given hour, morning, afternoon or evening will be better than some other that day.
Work with me here! My best today may not be wonderful–or even good. But it is bound to be better than another part of the day, right?
Try it! Just say to yourself, “I’m never going to have a bad day!” Then make the most of every hour.
By the way, don’t forget to check back later this afternoon for an update on the FDA hearings on carfilzomib. So try to enjoy your morning–just in case the news from the FDA review committee isn’t very good!
Feel good and keep smiling! Pat
