It’s easy to get caught-up in all of the hustle and bustle, pain and inconvenience of living with multiple myeloma. So I have learned to embrace any reason to break with routine and celebrate. Let’s be honest. Halloween is a silly holiday; an excuse to shop, eat too much sugar and play make believe. I LOVE IT!
Pattie decorates the house inside and out the first weekend of October. In recent years, more homes in our area have been doing the same.
I’m not big on creating the perfect costume for myself. But Pattie has fun with it. She wears a different costume into work each day leading-up to the big day, and the dialysis patients at her clinic love it!
My favorite part of the holiday is walking around the neighborhood with our dog, Finnegan, before and after the sun goes down on Halloween night. The three of us greet the trick-or-treaters, critiquing costumes and swapping stories with the neighbors.
Here in Florida most of us sit-out in front of our homes, waiting for the kids to arrive. Since many of the area homes sit dark–waiting for their owners to return from up-north for the winter–the kids know which homes to visit that way.
I feel so bad for those who’s lives have been turned-upside-down by hurricane Sandy. People in Florida certainly know how they feel! But other than experiencing some cooler than normal temps, the Gulf side of Florida escaped unscathed.
So tonight I will throw-on a lame excuse for a costume and happily greet the kids as they head-up our driveway. I can’t wait!
Feel good and keep smiling! Pat
